The Most Expensive Cities in Texas

Updated: April 4, 2018

Odessa, made famous as the setting for the popular TV series “Friday Night Lights,” has just been named the most expensive destination in Texas. The rankings were compiled by CheapHotels.org and were based on the cost of lodging in 30 Texan cities.

The survey compared 30 cities in the Lone Star State, using as its basis of comparison the average rate for each one’s cheapest available double room (minimum: 3-star hotel) during the month of April 2018. Most Texan cities reach their rate peak during the month of April, making it a suitable reference point.

An overnight stay in Odessa this early spring will cost a visitor an average of $186 nightly. Taking the number two and three slots on the survey are Waco in central Texas by the Brazos River and the state capital of Austin. Average rates of $176 and $174 per night, respectively, make them the Lone Star State’s second and third most expensive cities.

Falling just outside the Top 3 is the north Texas metropolis of Dallas. An average nightly price tag of $158 puts it in the survey’s number four spot. Two other metropolises, Houston and San Antonio, are slightly more affordable. Averaging $112 and $107 per night, respectively, both destinations fall in the middle of the survey’s pack. The most affordable Texan destination, by far, is Killeen, home of the Fort Hood military base. A guest spending the night there this April may be able to secure a room for just slightly more than $50.

About the Methodology

The survey considered all 13 cities in Texas boasting a population of more than 200,000 as well as another 17 destinations with a population of at least 100,000. For each city, the average price for the cheapest available double room was established for the time period spanning April 1–30, 2018. Only centrally located hotels rated at least 3 stars were considered. Rates were established in mid-March based on research conducted on the hotel comparison website Kayak.
