Indianapolis Hotels Skyrocket Up to 1700% for Super Bowl
January 27, 2012
Patriots and Giants fans who think the $2000 they are paying brokers for Super Bowl tickets is outrageous better get used to the price gouging. They'll also be shelling out exorbitantly more to stay in the heart of the action in Indianapolis this February 5th weekend. The results of a survey compiled by cheaphotels.org have uncovered sky-high prices for Indy hotel rooms within a short drive of Lucas Oil Stadium.
The survey found that Indianapolis's center city is completely sold out of hotel rooms for the Super Bowl weekend. Capitalizing on this situation, the few hotels in the outskirt neighborhoods that still have available rooms are pushing them to some outrageously high limits.
The America's Best Value Inn, for instance, a stone's throw away in East Indianapolis, is posting $990 rates on rooms that it typically fills for $66 per night. That means Super Bowl fans will be paying 1400% more for the privilege of attending the big game.
The Knights Inn Indianapolis has taken matters to an even greater extreme with 1758% price hikes over Super Bowl weekend. This hotel in the Indianapolis airport region has raised its regular low-budget rate of $39 to $725 in honor of the football showdown.
Venturing far out from Lucas Oil Stadium is the only shot fans have at securing a more reasonably priced hotel room. And as is to be expected, the farther out they commute from center city Indianapolis, the less they will pay. The town of Greenwood, for example, just inside the 15-mile Indy radius, has rooms for a "mere" 700% more than usual. A Super Bowl stay at this 2-star accommodation will cost fans $400.
To break the $200 barrier, last-minute Super Bowl attendees will have to gear up for a 30-mile trek. In Martinsville, $200 rooms are still being listed. And bargain hunters will really have to hoof it. Fifty minutes away from the game-day action in Columbus, the Day's Inn hotel is offering rooms for $100. That's double its usual rate.
The following table shows available hotels in Indianapolis and the vicinity for overnight February 5 into February 6 (Super Bowl) as well as their rates for a standard double room.
