The most expensive summer destinations in the United States

Updated: August 4, 2022

Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, two island destinations located off the southern coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, are the most expensive places to stay in the United States this summer, according to a survey by CheapHotels.org.

The survey compared accommodation rates across all U.S. destinations during the month of August 2022. Only hotels or inns rated at least 3 stars and located close to a beach or city center were considered.

With average rates of $525 and $485 per night, respectively, for the cheapest double room, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard emerged in first and second place. Third was Montauk, a village at the eastern tip of the Long Island peninsula in New York State, where rates came out at $416 per night.

Looking at the rest of the top ten, New York State is also represented by the idyllic city of Saratoga Springs in sixth spot, where average rates are $372 per night. New Jersey also features, with Long Beach Island in 4th position, where rates came out at $384 per night.

California also has two desirable destinations in the top ten: Avalon and Huntington Beach, with rates of $371 and $357, respectively. Maine, meanwhile, is represented by Bar Harbor ($383) and Kennebunkport ($354).

The table below shows the 10 priciest summer destinations in the US this year. The rates shown reflect the average price for each destination's cheapest available double room for the period August 1–31st, 2022.

About the Methodology

The survey considered all destinations in the USA with a minimum of 10 hotels/inns. Only well-located (close to the beach) properties rated at least 3 stars and with positive average guest ratings were considered. For each destination, the average price for the cheapest available double room was established for the period spanning August 1–31st, 2022. Rates were established in mid-July based on research using the hotel comparison website Kayak.
