According to a survey conducted by Cheaphotels.org., Martha's Vineyard is the most expensive summer destination in New England based on lodging costs.

The survey compared 30 popular destinations in New England based on the rate for the cheapest double room during the month of August. Only hotels or inns with 3 or more stars and that are located close to a beach or city center were considered.

Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket lead the ranking at average rates of $474 and $421, respectively. Bar Habor, Maine completes the podium with an average rate of $376 per night.

Boston comes in at an average of only $151 per night, making it one of the more affordable destinations. Hartford, Connecticut offered the least expensive lodging options in New England—rooms in the capital city average just $116 per night.

The following table compares 30 popular summer destinations in New England. The prices shown reflect the average rates for each destination's cheapest available double room for the time period spanning August 1–31, 2021.

About the Methodology

The survey considered 30 destinations in New England, which were mainly selected based on their total number of hotel rooms. For each destination, the average price for the cheapest available double room was established for the time period spanning August 1–31, 2021. Only hotels or inns rated at least 3 stars and located close to the city center/beach were considered. Rates were established in late-July based on research conducted on the hotel comparison website Kayak.
