NCAA Final Four Causing Phoenix and Scottsdale Hotel Rates to Skyrocket
March 29, 2017As the NCAA Final Four looms, hotel prices in the Phoenix-Scottsdale metropolitan area have soared to near-record levels. That’s the conclusion of a recent survey conducted by CheapHotels.org.
With the championship games just days away, almost half of the hotels in metro Phoenix are still listing vacancies for the Final Four action, which will run from March 31 to April 4, 2017. To secure one of these rooms, however, hoops fans can expect to pay an average of 97 percent more than they would on a regular night of the year, the survey found.
As might be anticipated, the highest rate hikes are occurring around Glendale’s University of Phoenix Stadium, the venue for the action. In this region, a select grouping of hotels have jacked up their rates by more 300 percent versus the typical price. College basketball loyalists who want to stay close to the stadium but pay as little as possible unfortunately won’t find any double rooms for less than $400 per night.
For more moderate rate hikes, downtown/midtown Phoenix and Old Town Scottsdale. are good options. Final Four ticketholders can expect to spend roughly $300 nightly for a double room (3 stars) there. The most affordable rooms within commuting access of the stadium are running approximately $200 per night. These accommodations are located in Phoenix Nord and the Phoenix International Airport area.
According to Barbara Adams from CheapHotels.org, “Average hotel rates in metro Phoenix have reached the second highest level in their history. Only for Super Bowl 2015 have rates been substantially higher. And back then, the area was virtually sold out."
The table that follows lists the hotels in the Phoenix-Scottsdale metropolitan area with the highest price increases for the long NCAA Final Four weekend. The prices displayed reflect the nightly rates for the period of March 31 to April 4, 2017. Regular prices reflect rates for the same room two weeks later. The hotel rates shown were established on March 27, 2017 via the hotel comparison site Kayak.
