The most expensive summer destinations in Colorado

July 25, 2018

Boulder, nestled in northern Colorado where the plains meet the Rocky Mountains, has revealed itself to be the most expensive summer destination in Colorado. The cost of its lodging this August puts the city in the number one spot on a recent survey conducted by CheapHotels.org.

For comparative purpose, the survey looked at the hotel rates of 20 popular destinations in the Centennial State. The month of August 2018 served as the basis of this comparison. It must be pointed out that the survey excluded hotels and inns lacking a central location and those with less than a 3-star rating.

A summer stay in Boulder will set an overnight guest back an average of $204 this August. And that’s for the city’s most affordable double room. Coming in second place on the survey at $184 nightly is Fort Collins. A vibrant town bustling with eateries, pubs and boutiques, this northern Colorado destination takes the survey’s number two spot at a rate of $184 nightly. Completing the Top 3 is Aspen, a popular Colorado ski resort among the rich and famous.

The Coloradoan state capital of Denver ranks fifth most expensive overall at an average price tag of $168 per night. On the other end of the spectrum, the most affordable destination among those considered by the survey is Pagosa Springs. A room in this southwest Colorado town known for its hot springs can be found this summer for just above $100 nightly.

About the Methodology

The survey considered 20 destinations in Colorado, which were mainly selected based on their number of available hotels during the summer months. For each destination, the average price for the cheapest available double room was established for the time period spanning August 1–31, 2018. Only centrally located hotels rated at least 3 stars were considered. Rates were established in mid-July based on research conducted on the hotel comparison website Kayak.
