Munich Hotels Raising Rates as Much up to 1000% for Champions League Final
Last Update: May 11, 2012
Fans who want to root for Chelsea in person at the UEFA Champions League final on May 19 are in for a big surprise if they haven’t booked a hotel room yet. As the title game date fast approaches, hotel owners in Munich, where the game is being played, are increasing their rates substantially.
Staying overnight in the host city when Chelsea takes on Bayern in the CL final will run fans Euro 450, and that’s for the cheapest available room. CheapHotels.org made this startling discovery after surveying the various hotel-booking sites and comparing their rates.
Most hotels in the Bavarian capital are already sold out on the day of the Champions League final. That scenario is prompting the dozen or so hotels, mainly in Munich’s outside districts, that are still listing vacancies to drive up their prices to exorbitant levels.
Just how high are overnight rates going? For example, the Hotel Maria Munich, which is located near St. Paul’s Church, has elevated its regular room price of Euro 85 to a whopping Euro 999 for the UEFA final. That figure represents a 1075% price increase. Not far behind is the Hotel Munich Inn, situated close to Central Station. This accommodation that usually charges Euro 81 per night has hiked its rates to Euro 899 for game day. That equates to a 1010% spike in price.
For fans who want to be in the centre of the action, the hotel-price news is dismal all around. In fact, they won’t be able to secure any double room in the city for less than Euro 450. If they want to squeeze into a single room they’ll pay marginally less. A cost-effective alternative is to book a hotel in the neighbouring city of Augsburg. A double room there is going for around Euro 100 per night and then it’s a direct one-hour train ride into Munich. Return trains run back to Augsburg until 3:00 in the morning.
The following list ranks Munich’s cheapest available hotels for the overnight May 19–20 timeframe.
