A Comparison of Hotel Rates in 50 US Cities

Updated: October 3, 2022

Boston is the most expensive US city for hotel accommodation, according to a new survey. The survey compared hotel prices across 50 US cities during October 2022 – the month when hotel rates in most American cities usually peak.

With an average rate of $262 for the cheapest double room, Boston emerged as the most expensive destination. Only prices at centrally-located hotels with 3 or more stars were taken into account for the survey.

Completing the podium were Austin and Detroit, where guests are likely to have to pay average rates of $255 and $244, respectively, for the cheapest room. In fourth position, and just slightly cheaper, was New York City, with an average rate of $240 per night.

Compared to last year, when rates were still affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, prices in Boston have climbed by about 10% this year. In Detroit, they’ve risen by more than 90%, and in New York City by an eye-popping 114%. On average, across all 50 cities included in the survey, hotel rates have increased by about 30%.

At the other end of the spectrum, the cheapest US city for accommodation came out as San Antonio, where travelers are likely to find a room for an average of $107. Only marginally pricier are Omaha and Las Vegas, with average rates of $109 and $110, respectively.

About the Methodology

The survey considered all 36 destinations in the US with populations of more than 500,000, as well as 14 selected destinations with a population of more than 250,000. For each destination, the average price for the cheapest available double room was established for the period October 1-31 2022. Rates were recorded during late September using leading hotel booking websites. Only centrally located hotels (downtown or close to downtown) and rated at least 3 stars were included.
