Survey
The most expensive beach destinations in United States
July 26, 2017Montauk, situated at the east end of the Long Island peninsula, has earned the distinction of being the USA’s most expensive beach destination this late summer. The most recent survey from CheapHotels.org has ranked it as the nation’s priciest sun and surf locale.
In compiling the rankings, the survey looked at all beach destinations in the United States. For the purpose of comparison, it focused on the minimum price beach goers will have to spend to stay overnight in the cheapest available double room at each locale during the month of August. The average minimum cost was set as the comparative base. It must be pointed out that hotels or inns with less than a 2-star rating and those not located near the beach were excluded from consideration.
Montauk takes the number one ranking on the survey with an average nightly rate of $312 for its least expensive double room. Rounding out the Top 3 are Nantucket, an isolated island tucked 30 miles south of Massachusetts’ Cape Cod, and the long sandy shores of Cannon Beach in northwest Oregon. At average overnight rates of $285 and $262, respectively, they take the survey’s number two and three slots.
Santa Monica ranks as California’s priciest summer beach destination. At an average nightly rate of $261, it comes in fourth on the survey. It, together with Coronado ($221) and Santa Barbara ($209), makes for three Californian destinations that landed in the Top 10.

About the Methodology
The survey considered all beach destinations in the USA boasting a minimum of 10 hotels/inns. Only well-located hotels (within walking distance to the beach) rated at least 2 stars and with positive average client ratings were considered. For each destination, the average price for the cheapest available double room was established for the time period spanning August 1–31, 2017. Rates were established in mid-July based on research conducted on the hotel comparison website Kayak.Press Contact
