The Most Expensive Cities in North America

Hotel guests can expect to pay more to stay overnight in Boston than anywhere else in North America. CheapHotels.org came to this conclusion after comparing the lodging rates of 30 popular destinations in the United States and Canada.

Travelers to Boston this October can expect to pay an average of $214 per night. Even then, they will have to settle for the most affordable double room. This figure positions Massachusetts’ capital city in the survey’s number one slot. In fact, Chicago and New York City, the number two and three finishers respectively, are both significantly less expensive. The Windy City is averaging $155 for an overnight stay this October while the Big Apple is just one dollar behind at $154 nightly.

Bargain travelers will find great deals in Montreal this October. At approximately $50 per night, Montreal ranks as the least expensive destination on the survey. On the flipside, Canada’s most expensive city is Calgary. This largest city in Alberta is posting hotel rates that are more than twice the price of those in Montreal. With an average nightly rate of $103, Calgary ranks as the costliest among all the Canadian cities considered by the survey.

The following table compares hotel rates during the month of October for 30 major cities in North America. The prices shown reflect the average rate for each city’s cheapest available double room for the time period spanning October 1–31, 2014. Only such hotels having a positive average client rating and those located centrally, no more than a mile from the city center, have been considered for this survey.
